Math Field Day is an opportunity for Orange County Elementary Schools to join together in promoting excellence in mathematics, team work, achieving goals, and school spirit.
Math Field Day is an all-day math competition for students in Grade 4, 5, and 6 sponsored by the Orange County Math Council (OCMC). A school can have only one team (4 team members, and 1 alternate) per grade level participating. Most schools hold try-outs and have practice sessions for their teams.
There are two regional competitions, one for the schools in the north part of the county, location and date not yet determined, and the other for schools in the south part of the county, held this year at Capistrano Valley HS on May 14, 2011.
There are 5 categories/contest:
(1) Number Sense
(2) Measurement and Geometry
(3) Algebra and Functions
(4) Statistics, Data Analysis, and Probability
(5) Mathematical Reasoning
Specific Info on the Competition Categories page. Olympic-style medals are awarded to the top 6 teams for each grade level for each category. All kids get a "goodie bag" of "stuff" from community donations.
Orange County Math Council has sponsored the OC Math Field Day for 19 years. Math Field Day is divided into two competitions: North Orange County and South Orange County. Each competition hosts approximately 80 teams from 45-50 Orange County elementary schools. Each year, the competition grows and more schools join together for this incredible opportunity.
